Aндрей Смуров, основатель и рулевой translit-a и просто очень хороший человек. Родился в Москве, возмужал в Амстердаме и Париже, а теперь топчет Лондон. В прошлом году translit записал свой лучший альбом на сегодняшний день, который скоро будет доступен всем заинтересованным. Красив как Аполлон, любит теннис и Грецию, варит прекрасные щи.
Почему ты решил писать песни?
Я к этому решению не приходил. Оно пришло ко мне. Прости за банальность.
Когда ты пишешь текст, всегда ли ты слышишь мелодию?
Если речь идёт о песне, то, к сожалению, да. Обычно сначала мелодия, и, если на неё сразу ничего не ложится, то она потом сильно давит и отвлекает.
Твои песни о тебе и твоих чувствах, или же в них говорит твой лирический герой?
Я не очень хорошо понимаю, что такое "лирический герой". Не знаю, кто там говорит. Но кто-то что-то говорит.
Ты любил в юности heavy metal, почему ты не используешь его в своих песнях?
Почему не использую? Мы разве не heavy metal играем?
Зачем тебе нужна вся эта история с translit-ом?
Мне не хватает историй. Я не в том смысле, что история с translit-ом какая-то особенная, или красивая, нет, но надо же что-то со всем этим делать!
Кто больше всего повлиял на последний альбом translit-a?
Да я сам взял и повлиял. Ну и все ребята, которые на нём играли. Там каждый из участвовавших очень неплохо на конечный результат повлиял. Отлично поработали.
Ты доволен этим альбомом?
Пока да. Все, кто альбом слушал, говорят, что это на голову лучше всего, что мы делали до него, и, по-моему, они не льстят. Главное, я сам так считаю. Хотя возможно, что через какое-то время он мне дико разонравится.
Твоя любимая песня на нём?
Так они ж все как детки родные.
Чего ты хочешь добиться с translit-oм?
Свободы.
Led Zeppelin твоя любимая группа?
Одна из.
Твой самый удачный концерт?
Будет - в октябре сего года.
И самый запомнившийся концерт из тех, на которых ты побывал?
Ой... Первый мой концерт Фёдорова запомнился. Я после него как-то к музыке по-другому относиться стал. Ещё Хвост в Амстердаме, в январе 2004-го. Концертом это назвать, наверное, было можно с натяжкой, но я помню, что именно во время него до меня дошло, что надо песни писать. И исполнять их. Как обещания.
Ну и как, получается?
А ты как думаешь? Я не выкаблучиваюсь, но это ж не мне судить, так? А с другой стороны - кому, как не мне? Если б я не думал, что получается, или вот-вот получится, не делал бы всего этого.
Должна ли современная муз. группа быть актуальной и в каком плане актуальной? Общего ощущения времени или может текста, стиля, влияния других музыкантов?
Ну, актуальность - вопрос субъективный. И вообще, актуально - это как? Актуальность временем же не определяется. Для меня ребята типа The Velvet Underground или, ну не знаю, те же The Smiths, в тысячу раз актуальнее всего, что сейчас в музыке происходит. Или ещё лучше - пошёл, посмотрел на Ван Гога или Босха, ну кто в принципе может быть актуальнее? А если актуальность привязывать непосредственно ко времени, то вот, пожалуйста, телевизор включил, там актуальненько так всё - в смысле, сегодняшний день, как на ладони.
Translit актуальная группа?
Ха-ха! Ну да. Для меня, во всяком случае. A вообще, translit никогда не задумывался как претензия на какую-то оригинальность, мы колёса не изобретаем. Но то, что изобретаем, по-моему, катится неплохо.
Что было в старом translit-е (до 2007 г.), чего тебе отчаянно не хватает в новом?
Единственное, чего мне действительно отчаянно не хватает, так это возможности регулярно собираться, разбирать новый материал, репетировать, выступать, в конце концов. То есть то, как мы записали последние два альбома - это, конечно, круто - собрались ребята в первый раз в жизни, на недельку, сыграли какие-то странные доселе неслышанные песенки, записали живенько так, с энтузиазмом. Эта лёгкость, по-моему, особенно на последнем альбоме хорошо чуствуется, и она, несомненно, как один из лидирующих инструментов там. Но вот концерты раз в 2-3 года давать - это, конечно, маловато.
Кто ты, в двух словах?
Человек. Одним словом.
Почему ты переехал в Лондон?
Всегда любил Лондон. Сейчас ещё больше. Мне кажется, здесь, как ни странно, элементарного позёрства не так много. Или оно просто не так заметно. Прекрасный город, здесь всё какое-то брызжущее энергией, настоящее и поэтому притягивающее - даже грязь, пыль, кирпичные стены в копоти.
Твоё любимое место в Лондоне?
Да много их, cмотря с кем и как... Я на северо-западе живу - там хорошо. Кэмден рядом - хорошо, хоть и опопсел он последнее время - сплошные маечки, да магнитики на холодильник. Парламентский холм в Хэмстедe ранним утром. Когда дымка, и собака какая-нибудь счастливая вокруг бегает. Недавно вот в пятницу вечером случайно проходил мимо Саутваркского собора, смотрю - открыто, зашёл. А там Баха играют. И тётеньки поют. То есть вечер пятницы, вокруг все пиво пьют, а я сижу, один, как пыльным мешком ударенный и понимаю, что на данный момент лучше места быть просто не может.
Любить, чтобы жить или жить, чтобы любить?
И так, и эдак, пожалуйста. Это ж не разделить.
Зачем человек рождается и живёт на земле?
Любить. И быть любимым, если повезёт. Я там, по-моему, в предыдущем ответе эту тему хорошо раскрыл.
Ты чувствуешь себя одиноким человеком?
Да.
Ты ненавидишь людей?
Да ну, я ж не сумасшедший. К тому же я не уверен, что умею это делать.
Ты любишь людей?
Я ж говорю - не сумасшедший я.

Да.

Andrei Smourov – founder and skipper of translit and just a good person. Born in Moscow, came of age in Amsterdam and Paris, now exploring London. Last year translit recorded their best album to date – it will be available to all interested parties soon. Beautiful like Apollo, he likes tennis and Greece, and makes great soups.
How did you come to the decision to write songs?
I didn’t come to that decision, it came to me. Excuse the banality.
Do you always hear a melody in your head when you write poems?
If you mean lyrics for a song – yes, unfortunately. Melody comes first, then if no words immediately follow, it only creates additional pressure and acts as a distraction.
Are your songs about you, or is it your “lyrical hero” talking?
To be honest, I don’t fully understand what a “lyrical hero” is. So I don’t really know who’s talking in my songs. Somebody must be talking something.
You listened to heavy metal when you were a kid, why don’t you use it in your songs?
Of course we do! Is it not heavy metal that we play?
Why do you need this whole translit story?
I don’t get enough stories, I miss them. It doesn’t mean this story is particularly special or beautiful, but I guess you’ve got to do something with all those things that keep on coming out from time to time.
Who was the biggest influence on this latest album by translit?
Well, I was. And all the guys who played on it. They all had a great influence on the end result. Great work it was.
Are you happy with this album?
I am, so far – so good. Everyone who listened to it said it was by far the best thing we’ve done, and I don’t really suspect them of flattery. The most important is that I do share this point of view as well. Having said that, I admit it may very well be possible I’ll change my point of view after a while.
What’s your favourite song on it?
They’re all like little children to me.
What do you want to achieve with translit?
Freedom.
Is Led Zeppelin your favourite band?
Definitely one of them.
Your most successful gig?
The one we’ll play in October this year.
And the most memorable concert you’ve ever been to?
Ehh… The first time I saw Leonid Fedorov. It’s like I got another set of ears after that gig. Alexei Khvostenko in Amsterdam in January 2004. I guess you couldn’t really call it a proper concert, but I remember that this was when I actually realised that it was time to start writing songs and make them come to life – like promises.
And is it working out?
What do you think? I’m not playing this modesty game, but I can’t be the one to judge, can I? On the other hand, who if not I? Anyway, one thing is for sure – if I didn’t think that we were doing something worthwhile, or if we weren’t just about to get there, I wouldn’t be doing it.
Should a today’s band be timely, pressing and in what way? By common sense of time or that of the lyrics, style, influence of other musicians?
Well, being timely is subjective. And what is it – being timely? It is not defined by time. For me guys like The Velvet Underground or, I don’t know, The Smiths are thousand times more timely than everything that’s happening in today’s music. Or better still – look at Van Gogh or Bosch – what can be more timely than that? If you want to tie being timely to today’s world, switch on the telly – it’s all very timely in there.
Is translit a timely band?
Haha, ‘course we are! At least for me. Actually, translit was never meant to re-invent the wheel. But the things we do, I think they roll quite well.
What do you miss from translit of prior to 2007, and what are you missing in this new incarnation?
The only thing I really miss is a possibility to regularly get together, mess about with the new material, rehearse, perform. I mean, the way we’ve done the last two albums was great – the guys met for the first time in their lives, got together for a week, played and recorded a bunch of unknown songs that none of them had ever heard before. And it was done in a very lively way, with lots of enthusiasm. This liveliness, I think, can be heard and felt quite well on the last album, it’s one of the leading instruments on it. But playing a couple of gigs every 2-3 years, isn’t enough.
Who are you, in a couple of words?
A human being. It’s simple really.
Why did you move to London?
I always loved London. Even more so now. Surprisingly, it seems to me there’s not as many posers here as in other places. Or they just go unnoticed. It’s a beautiful, imposing city that feeds you with energy, it’s all the real thing here – dirt, dusk, those blackened bricks.
What’s your favourite place in London?
Well, there’s quite a few – I guess it all depends on how you are, who you are with… I live in North-West. Camden is nearby, which is nice, although it got really “pop” lately – t-shirts and fridge magnets. Parliament Hill in Hampstead Heath early in the morning – when it’s still foggy, and some happy dog’s running around. One Friday night I was walking along the South bank on the way to a pub, past the Southwark Cathedral, to my surprise it was open, so I just walked in. And they’re playing Bach in there. And then some old ladies are singing. It’s Friday night, everyone’s getting pissed outside, and I’m just sitting there on my own under those beautiful arches with my mouth open, thinking there simply can’t be a better place that this one.
Love to live or live to love?
I’ll have it both ways please. It’s the same thing anyway.
Why being born or living in this world?
To love. And to be loved if you’re really lucky. I think I covered this topic quite extensively in my previous answer.
To you feel lonely?
Yes.
Do you hate people?
Why, do I look mad? I don’t think I do. On top of all that I’m not sure I know how to hate.
Do you love people?
I told you – I’m not mad.
